There
are so many questions you can run into when you consider weight loss diet
plans. It takes too long to go through all the choices when all you want
is fast weight loss that hopefully lasts forever.
Nobody would blame you if you were having difficulty: we’re constantly presented with ads of what’s new at fast food outlets and our society tends to incorporate food into most social activities and entertainment.
Perhaps you don’t really need a diet at all, but a different mindset. More specifically, perhaps you need to eat consciously rather than unconsciously, which will cause you to lose weight naturally. Let’s look into this some more.
The media promotes fast food
Have you ever noticed that on Australian television, you can be bombarded
with an ad for a fast food outlet almost every ad break? So if you’re
watching a half hour or an hour program, you’re told up to six times how
you must get the burger or shake or ice-cream being advertised. There’s
virtually no advertising for healthy eating for weight loss.
Eating has become an entertaining, social pastime.
Eating seems to be the central activity when you socialize with family, to keep the kids quiet or sometimes when you’re bored. And it’s quite normal to go out for lunch or dinner if you’re catching up with somebody- which tends to happen at cafes or restaurants where there’s generally rich food on the menu.
Even things like going to the movies has a lolly and ice-cream ritual attached to it. To eat a healthy diet doesn’t really fit in with any of the above lifestyle habits we’re all so used to.
Change your mindset- become a conscious eater for a natural way to lose weight
Most of us don’t think before we put food into our mouth, that is, it tends to be an unconscious act. Unconscious acts are easy and don’t take effort. You may feel like something fast, you see a biscuit, good, you’re done for now. But if you made eating a conscious act, which can involve a little effort, you would ask questions before you put your hand to mouth.
It’s changing your mindset about the act of eating that naturally brings about weight loss. So the best two questions you can ask yourself are: what am I eating and why.
What am I eating?
How much fat is in my food? Perhaps I could use less butter and steam
some things.
What’s gone into my food? Perhaps I could read the label and chose products with less numbers.
Is it frozen or packaged? Maybe I could eat fresh food that I can prepare.
I’m reaching for a packet of 3 minute noodles or a chip snack… maybe I could go one more step and eat the chips with a carrot… or dip a carrot in hommus?
Focus on healthy lifestyle choices where weight loss becomes a natural by-product.
Why am I eating?
Is it linked to socializing? Perhaps I can talk to my friend over a walk
rather than over a meal.
Am I upset? Maybe I can process my feelings better through a walk.
Am I bored? I could think of other activities that entertain me and keep me happily occupied.
Am I actually hungry? Then maybe I don’t really need dinner tonight or breakfast this morning and just have some fruit…
Becoming aware of these questions above can act as a kind of technique for weight loss because it shifts your focus away from feeling preoccupied about losing weight to your wellbeing instead. This way, rather than aiming to lose x kilos in x days, aim for healthy choices for your wellbeing which will bring about natural and permanent weigh loss over time.
To conclude, if you want to lose weight, it’s understandably difficult because of our culture’s attitude toward food as entertainment and also the way it’s advertised. If, however, you start taking a conscious approach to eating and ask yourself questions about what you’re eating and why, you can help yourself develop healthier habits for your wellbeing which can result in a natural way to lose weight.
